The world’s first smart shutters, Smart-tilt®, are being launched by Elizabeth Henley Ltd. The unique, innovative design has been developed in the UK over the last three years.

“They contain microprocessor technology to close the shutters automatically at dusk and reopen them at dawn,” explained a company spokesperson. “There’s further control via a smartphone. We’re so excited about this product, the first of its kind anywhere in the world.”

The unique design has inset louvres, meaning that as they close automatically, the integrated light built into the top of the shutters comes on, creating mood lighting. Most importantly, the property looks occupied from outside, a superb security feature.

The spokesperson added: “We’re preparing a crowdfunding campaign to launch Smart-tilt® this year.

“The wingtip and shutter designs have been patented, and we’ve signed a licensing agreement with Apple to fit HomeKit technology into the shutters.”

Elizabeth Henley ltd becomes the first company to do this, sparking global interest, especially from America, as home automation continues to be a rapidly growing market.

In recent years, sales of blinds and window shutters have rocketed, while ‘traditional’ window coverings such as curtains have become less popular. Figures published last year by a research company, and reported in the national press, found that sales of shutters had soared five-fold to 10% since 2000.

A liking for modernist design favouring ‘clean’ lines, as featured on the TV show Grand Designs, is reckoned to be behind this shift in popularity.

Plantation shutters and similar models offer homeowners the added advantage of keeping the sun away at the height of summer, while keeping wind off the window panes.
