Anglian
Water appoints Chubb Electronic Security in three year maintenance
deal
Chubb
Electronic Security, a leading security specialist, is working
with Anglian Water, part of the AWG plc group, in a major project
to provide maintenance and installation services for intruder
alarms, access control and CCTV systems at the latter’s
Clean & Waste Water Treatment sites across the UK. Chubb Electronic
Security is part of UTC Fire & Security, a unit of United
Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).
Anglian Water supplies water and wastewater services to the largest
geographical area of all the water companies in England and Wales.
As the name suggests, the company serves East Anglia and part
of the East Midlands, providing water and sewerage services to
around six million industrial, commercial and residential customers.
The three-year contract covers more than 600 separate ‘systems’
across more than 400 sites. These include such facilities as Equipment
Stores, Pumping Stations and Nitrate Reduction Plants, many of
which are in remote locations, involving the support of no fewer
than five CES regional offices. As well as maintaining current
systems, CES’ remit includes quoting for replacement and
upgraded technologies, as well as ‘new build’ or refurbishment
scenarios both now and in the future.
In appointing a new contractor, it was important to find the right
provider, as Maintenance Engineer for Anglian Water, Tony Brittain,
comments: “We are a nationwide business that requires a
nationwide service, delivered locally, but managed from one central
point. Chubb Electronic Security was awarded the contract because
it was able to deliver the total solution at the right price,
meeting an immediate need but also having the willingness and
capability to meet our future requirements.”
Simon Pickett, Business Development Manager for CES’ National
Accounts concurs: “We demonstrated to Anglian Water that
we have the all ‘round package, not just from a technical
perspective but also our knowledge of current and forthcoming
legislation. Our infrastructure is such that we have a central
management team to co-ordinate what is required, which is then
delivered through our network of local branch offices.
“A key reason for winning contracts of this size is the
consistency of service we provide, and our attention to detail.
We do not ‘chop and change’ Account Managers on a
whim, and they work closely with their colleagues within the branches
to truly take ownership of each project. We acknowledge that different
customers have different needs, and that means tailoring our response
accordingly. This, combined with regular dialogue and a rapid
response to any queries, is proving a winning formula.”
Anglian Water operates in one of the driest regions of the country
with only 600mm of rain per year. It supplies over one billion
litres of water every day through its extensive network of 36,000
kilometres of water mains. Anglian Water is also responsible for
1,007 sewage treatment works.
The company is headquartered in Huntingdon and employs approximately
4,000 staff across the UK.

Frontier
Pitts Terra Hydraulic Barrier has been successfully crash tested
in accordance with BS PAS 68:2007, stopping 7500kg travelling
at 40mph (65kmph)
The
Terra Hydraulic Barrier, a vertically opened, reinforced boom,
was crash tested in accordance with British standard PAS 68:2007
standards . The test was conducted to prove the arresting capability
of the Terra Hydraulic Barrier with a boom length of 4500mm, when
impacted with a 7500kg test vehicle at a speed of 65km/hour (40mph).
The BSI PAS 68: 2007 specification requirements are comparable
to that required by the Department of State test standard SD-STD-2.01
K8 standard. Installation of the Terra Hydraulic Barrier is in
line with BSI PAS 69:2007.
Following the highly successful crash tests involving the other
certified equipment in the Anti Terra range, Frontier Pitts was
confident that the Terra Hydraulic Barrier would also pass the
toughest test and achieve the most difficult standard.
This impressive test result has not only proved the stopping power
of this equipment, but also the reliability and fortitude of design.
The Terra Hydraulic Barrier is available with a boom length up
to 4500mm. A hydraulic motor operates the robust rising arm barrier
boom which has a reinforced fixed end rest positioned at either
end. In the closed position the boom can be securely locked using
a powered magnetic locking bolt.
Key features of the Terra Hydraulic Barrier include a range of
operating speeds and secure magnetic locking. For added security
full height swivel skirts or lower folding skirts can be mounted
to the Terra Hydraulic Barrier boom. Other standard barrier accessories
such as boom lights and signage are also available.
The Terra Hydraulic Barrier requires minimal foundation depths
of only 300mm, which can be deeper to reduce the surface area,
suiting individual requirements.
The Result - Frontier Pitts have developed the Terra Hydraulic
Barrier and the Anti Terra series to meet the requirements of
our customers at Airports, Embassies, Palaces, Government Institutes
and Military bases around the World. The Anti Terra range includes
the Terra Blocker, Terra Bollards (crash tested as a single unit
and dual unit systems), the Terra Beam, the Terra Road Closer,
and the Terra Gate, which has been impacted in both the fully
closed and half open positions, without the need for repair. After
all the crash tests the equipment was fully functional.
The Frontier Pitts crash rated Terra Hydraulic barrier ATTB-80
is available in with a boom length up to 4500mm.

Pitts High Security Anti Terra Blocker has been successfully crash
tested in accordance with BS PAS 68: 2007 standards.
The
Terra Blocker successfully stopped a European lorry weighing 7500kg,
travelling at 50mph.
Following months of in-house design, computer simulations and
further R&D testing, the Terra Blocker, was successfully crash
tested at TRL Crash Laboratories, stopping a lorry weighing 7500kg,
travelling at 50mph (80kmph), as specified by the BS PAS 68:2007
standard.
The Terra Blocker model ATTB-80e, designed with a lifted height
of 1100mm, successfully stopped and immobilised the vehicle. With
zero penetration of the cargo trailer past the face of Terra Blocker,
the equipment successfully met the requirements specified in the
BS PAS 68:2007 standard. This impressive test result has not only
proved the stopping power of the Terra Blocker, but also the reliability
and resilience of design.
Frontier Pitts were confident in selecting the toughest test,
to achieve the BS PAS 68:2007 standard following the previous
Terra Blocker crash tests. The Terra Blocker model ATTB-80, designed
with a lifted height of 810mm, has been previously crash tested
in accordance with DoS K12 and BS PAS 68:2005 standards, using
an International truck, weighing 7500kg and travelling at 50mph,
purchased from America.
No other company in the World can offer a product which can surpass
the standards for PAS 68:2007 and the Department of State certification.
This is a major breakthrough in high security, anti-terrorist
barricades. These test results have been witnessed by CPNI, previously
NSAC (National Security Advice Centre) plus NICC; the UK Governments
Advisory Body for Security.
Frontier Pitts have developed the Anti Terra Blockers to meet
the requirements of our customers at Airports, Embassies, Palaces,
Government Estates and Military Bases around the World.

Don't
Cut Corners On Security, Secom Tells FM Sector
Never
cut corners on security to reduce the costs – or improve
the profitability – of long term facilities management contracts,
warns Alan Hazell, UK South Regional Sales Manager for leading
electronic security solutions provider Secom plc. He says flawless
security is a vital ingredient for good facilities management
in the public and private sectors, and second best is nearly always
a false economy.
The spread of private finance initiative (PFI)
and public private partnership (PPP) projects, where upfront investment
is repaid through ongoing management, highlights the difficult
choice facing all facilities managers, he says. “They are
under pressure to maintain high standards in the projects they
manage, but at the same time they are seeking to minimise costs
to maximise the profitability of the management contract. In the
PFI/PPP sector it’s potentially more challenging because
it’s a long haul relationship and private investors are
understandably looking for a reasonable return over the 20–30
year term.”
The public and private sectors have combined
forces to develop new facilities in various areas – such
as prisons, hospitals and schools – enabling the government
to deliver more of its promises on public service improvements.
And in the private sector, facilities management for shops, offices
and industrial parks has become a significant outsourced specialisation,
allowing property developers to focus on their core business,
and commercial tenants on theirs.
“Against this backdrop, facilities managers
are looking for cost effective ‘one stop shop’ solutions
in security – as with other services such as contract cleaning,
catering and building management. Security is required to ensure
a safe environment, keeping wrongdoers out (or in) and to protect
valuable assets,” says Alan Hazell.
“Crime gets a great deal of media attention,
but if serious incidents in public buildings were to result from
poor security, the likely publicity for the facilities managers
or others responsible could be extremely damaging. It would also
undermine the PFI principle.
“Facilities managers have to ensure protection
against traditional crimes against persons or property –
such as minor assaults and thefts – but increasingly they
face incidents of vandalism, arson and bodily harm, in addition
to headline-grabbing murders or robberies. Electronic security
solutions have a strong deterrent effect, but where crime does
occur, they can be a source of crucial evidence.”
He says specialist security solution providers
are in demand to provide a reliable, comprehensive service. A
multi-faceted security system, embracing surveillance, intruder
detection and access controls that can be maintained by a regular,
single engineer is particularly attractive – especially
where the system is in a secure environment. In both public and
private sectors, long term business relationships based on agreed
service levels are favoured.
“One of the difficulties for the security
industry is the tendency for some providers to grow by acquisition,
which means that contractual responsibilities may effectively
pass through several hands during the contract period,”
says Alan Hazell. “In some cases this could impact on service
delivery. On the other hand, companies that can demonstrate organic
growth over a long period, a great service record and the technical
and financial backing of a major group, tend to be the more popular
choice of facilities managers.”
As a security solutions provider in the latter
category, Secom plc enjoys the support of facilities managers
in a growing portfolio of public and private sector installations
in the UK and elsewhere. In Japan, the group recently won a contract
to secure a major PFI prison development.
Secom provides a range of electronic solutions which may be used
on their own, but are increasingly built into comprehensive security
packages to provide the flawless umbrella cover increasingly demanded
by facilities managers. The Secom offering includes CCTV and alarm
systems that can be monitored remotely or on site, and access
control systems to suit organisations of all sizes. For organisations
operating multiple sites, the Secom SIMS package (Security Information
Management Services) provides fingertip management of local security
systems via the internet.
Alan Hazell says: “In addition to our
quality solutions, we build relationships by providing ongoing
service through our highly experienced engineers, all of whom
undergo strict security screening before we allow them to represent
Secom. We also work closely with a number of police services to
minimise crime at source.”
Secom plc installs innovative tailored security
solutions for commercial, public sector and domestic customers
throughout the UK. Its ongoing quality service includes 24-hour
monitoring of intruder and fire alarms, and video surveillance
systems. Secom plc is the UK arm of a major global electronic
security group, established in the 1960s. The group operates in
11 countries and its 38,000 employees serve more than a million
customers.

Front Desk Staff Can Avoid Attack In A
Single Second – Thanks To Safetell
Safetell
– the UK’s leading expert in security for the workplace
– has launched a new anti-personal attack solution, CounterShield,
to screen off and protect public-facing staff from the risk of
a verbal or physical attack.
With a total of 3.3 million work hours lost each year due to violent
attacks in the workplace, CounterShield gives staff total control
over their level of nprotection in an open plan desk or trading
environment – whilst reducing the effects of stress and
staff sickness.
The latest in a line of Safetell security risk solutions, CounterShield
offers the optimum defence guard by allowing the screen to be
lowered slowly in anticipation of a known, higher risk situation
or very quickly in response to an immediate or escalating attack.
Activation time is just one second.
Intelligent sensors detect obstacles that will stop the shield
from effectively shutting, such as a person’s arm or an
implement they are carrying. To ensure that enough warning is
given to remove the obstacle, the CounterShield screen halts before
making contact. It then repeatedly attempts to close, to prompt
withdrawal of the obstacle.
An electric motor drives the robust polycarbonate screen between
fully open-plan and completely closed. Screens can be installed
and controlled singularly, or multiple screens fitted side-by-side
to offer group control.
The system operates from a rechargeable battery, which is connected
to the standard mains electricity supply. In the event of a power
cut, the battery will continue to function for up to 20 operations
– by which time mains power would have been restored.
Glazing area panels can provide protection in the event of a premeditated
attack, where a large implement such as a pick axe is used. However,
security is just one issue in a customer service-led environment.
Easy access, good communications and clear information are also
pivotal design elements of the CounterShield solution. Featuring
natural speech transfer, it aims to offer first-class protection
as well as enhanced interaction between staff and customers.
