An “MOT” For Health,
Safety And Welfare In Schools And Colleges
ems
of Horsham, West Sussex are pleased to announce the introduction
of the Safe School Audit, to provide an “MoT” for
the health, safety and welfare provision of schools and colleges.
With increased competition for pupil admissions, safeguarding
the wellbeing of students and staff is not just a legal requirement,
it makes commercial sense. The Safe School Audit (SSA) reassures
parents that the school or college provides the best physical
and pastoral care to their children.
The SSA will also help address the uncertainty caused by the recent
changes to the Inspection of Independent Schools, and from activities
like increased school trips caused by the Learning Outside the
Classroom Manifesto.
The ems Safe School Audit will provide an independent, unbiased,
and accurate assessment on a broad range of your health, safety
and welfare functions. The results will ascertain whether current
policies and practices are adequate and, if not, will establish
where improvements can be made and ensure informed decisions can
be made, based on practical information.
A Safe School Audit will impartially assess the management of
policies, procedures and records in four main areas: Safety, Security,
School Management and Student & Staff Wellbeing.
SAFETY: Ensure compliance to all
relevant health and safety, building and environmental legislation,
including areas such as asbestos, risk assessments, and dealing
with emergencies, disasters and fire.
SECURITY: Confirm statutory requirements
relating to child protection are being met. For example, reassure
parents that CRB for permanent and temporary staff, including
outside contractors, is being maintained.
SCHOOL MANAGEMENT: Verify appropriate
policies and procedures are in place to meet relevant standards
eg: The Independent School Standard 2003 or ISI (Independent Schools
Inspectorate).
STUDENT AND STAFF WELLBEING: Audit
the policies and procedures that ensure the welfare and pastoral
care of students and staff provides the best possible environment
for teaching, accommodation, sports, and all aspects of school
life.
A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of a Safe
School Audit that will clearly demonstrate the health, safety
and welfare qualifications of the school to internal staff, pupils
and prospective parents.
