Bisley Goes Green
At Prima 2007
Making
impressions' was the theme of this years’ Design Prima show,
and Bisley, the UK’s largest office furniture manufacturer,
took the opportunity to make a bold, green impression. The company
launched its 'communicating carbon' campaign – its commitment
to accurately reporting the carbon footprint of every one of its
steel-based products.
As well as highlighting its own ‘green’ credentials,
Bisley also invited visitors to participate in a survey to determine
just how high a priority 'sustainable development' is to their
clients in the product selection process.
The results of the research were mixed; although awareness of
green issues is high and routinely included in product specification,
it scores low in purchase priority. Regardless of people’s
desire to go ‘green’, it seems that price is still
placed ahead of ‘sustainability’.
“The need to provide a sustainable and yet competitive offer
should not be surprising,” said Sales & Marketing Director,
Richard Blackwell. “Fortunately our products and manufacturing
facilities place us in the perfect position, as Bisley is now
able to report the carbon footprint of each of its products –
increasingly requested by specifiers and end-users.”
As a direct response to customer requests and as part of its ongoing
environmental objectives, Bisley has been working closely with
OFFMA, the trade association for UK manufactured office furniture
to calculate their greenhouse gas emissions product by product;
significant news for furniture suppliers at a time when both public
and private sector businesses are including environmental criteria
in their tender processes.
“Co-operating with OFFMA on this project is especially important”
says Bisley’s Sales & Marketing Director Richard Blackwell.
“Manufacturers need to be able to offer the assurance of
an independent methodology and verifiable emissions data. The
OFFMA model uses published energy figures and internationally
accepted emission standards such as those used by Dept. Environment,
Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the World Business Council
on Sustainable Development (WBCSD).”
Bisley also reminded visitors of its powerful environment ‘package’
including: ISO14001 accreditation, generally regarded as the minimum
necessary to convince stakeholders that organisations are taking
'sustainable development' seriously, the fact that steel is 100%
recyclable, and that there is a well-established and professional
steel recycling industry. This is supported in no small part by
Bisley's modern, efficient and UK-based manufacturing sites.
