Fire Panels Protect Student Village
Advanced
Electronics intelligent control panels are behind a large fire
detection system protecting a new student village in the centre
of Lincoln. Capable of accommodating over 1,000 students, ‘The
Pavilions’ is now the largest student village in Lincoln,
comprising of eight accommodation blocks varying from four to
eight storeys in height.
The fire detection system comprises of ten networked Mx-4000 control
panels, at least one situated in each accommodation block, interfaced
to 1,700 Apollo Discovery fire detectors and devices. The main
block also contains a bespoke 500-zone LED mimic panel coupled
with a scaled site plan, also supplied by Advanced. This integrated
system allows any fire and fault condition, at any location, to
be instantly alerted on all the fire panels and site mimic panel.
In the event of a fire, the system also sends messages via a site-wide
pager system, opens dampers for smoke ventilation, releases magnetic
door retainers and initiates lift shutdowns. The system was installed
by Leader Systems UK Ltd for the client, The Mainstay Group.
Commenting on the project Paul Whittingham, of managing agents
The Mainstay Group said, “The installation, design and implementation
phases went very smoothly and the fire detection system has proved
to be totally reliable. It has been trouble-free from an operational
and safety point of view, which is a credit to all parties concerned.”
The Mx-4000 control panels are configured to enable a phased evacuation
of the building ensuring that only residents in the immediate
vicinity and above the area of alarm are evacuated first. Should
the alarm continue the system will then evacuate the entire floor
where the incident occurred, followed by the evacuation of the
entire block as necessary. Leader Systems worked closely with
Advanced to develop special verification software for all automatic
detection within the high risk areas. This is programmed to operate
over and above the main phased evacuation programme.
Advanced Electronics manufactures a comprehensive range of intelligent
control and indicating panels, software and peripherals for fire
detection, smoke control and emergency lighting monitoring. The
Mx-4000 family of fire panels is approved to EN54 Parts 2 &
4 and is compatible with both Hochiki and Apollo protocols.

Wagner
fire protection for historic Cathedral
Wagner
UK has supplied Air Sampling Smoke detection systems from its
popular TITANUS® range to provide early warning smoke detection
for the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in
Norwich. St John’s is the second largest Catholic Cathedral
in the UK and is the seat of the Bishop of East Anglia. It is
home to a thriving community and attracts visitors from around
the world who come to admire the magnificent architecture, stone
carvings and stain-glass windows. TITANUS® ASD systems were
chosen as they can detect fires at a very early stage, often before
visible smouldering takes place and smoke develops. This early
detection is vital to provide the highest level of protection
for this historic building.
The ASD solution was installed as part of a larger fire system
upgrade that was designed by Building Services Consulting Engineers,
Wilson & Partners in close in partnership with English Heritage
who part funded the works. A combination of TITANUS® PRO·SENS®
and TITANUS® MICRO·SENS® units were installed in
the main body of the Cathedral. WAGNER’s discreet sampling
points were fitted in areas of particular architectural importance
such as the ceilings, to minimise any damage to the historic interior
of the Cathedral and to ensure that the sampling pipes were hidden
from view. WAGNER UK’s TITANUS® ASD systems provide
an ideal and cost effective solution for smoke detection in buildings
that have large high-ceiling open areas.
PRO·SENS® and MICRO·SENS®, like the other
ASD units in the TITANUS® range, incorporate PIPE·GUARD
and LOGIC·SENS. PIPE-GUARD is a unique monitoring system
that detects if a sampling hole is blocked, a pipe is ruptured
or if the air sampling unit has failed. This feature is vital
in inaccessible areas where access is restricted and identification
of individually blocked sampling points is essential. LOGIC·SENS
is an advanced signal processing technology that analyses the
smoke sample and provides the earliest possible smoke detection
whilst safely eliminating false alarms such as cigarette smoke
and diesel fumes.
The TITANUS® range has been developed as a simple and low
cost air sampling system replacement for point smoke detectors,
providing significant benefits for large open spaces, in areas
where future access is likely to be a problem (in voids, shafts,
locked rooms, etc) or where the environment is too harsh for traditional
smoke detectors.

"EMS
Protects Concorde Heritage"
EMS
Group has been chosen to provide the fire protection for the inside
of Concorde, one of the rare and historic aircraft, which form
part of the new £25M AirSpace exhibition at the Imperial
War Museum Duxford. Duxford's Concorde 101 is one of the most
tested pre-production prototypes and the fastest Concorde ever
to have flown, having reached a speed of Mach 2.23 during a flight
in 1974. On its retirement, it was donated to the Duxford Aviation
Society, who are based at Duxford, and was flown for the last
time into the Museum in 1977.
The Society wanted a simple, unobtrusive form of fire detection
for the inside of the aircraft, with the control panel mounted
remotely, alongside other fire detection equipment in the hangar.
EMS Group’s 5000 FirePoint wire-free analogue fire system
was the perfect solution and easily met the requirements of the
project. In contrast, a traditional solution using fire-rated
cable would have been costly and difficult to install without
altering the original interior of this historic aircraft. The
system will be installed by EMS Group’s local partner Global
Fire Services.
5000 FirePoint smoke sensors are based on established industry
designs, have no external aerials and have built-in battery packs
with a typical 5-year life. System wide power management facilities
and advanced in-device electronics ensures battery replacement
can be scheduled within normal maintenance routines, reducing
operational costs. The elimination of expensive fire-rated cable
means that EMS Group’s wire-free sensors can be typically
installed in less than 10 minutes.
Even though EMS Group’s wire-free solutions are ideal for
heritage applications, their radio-based systems have been successfully
installed in a diverse range of applications - from new build
through to areas such as airports and military bases where high
levels of potential interference exist.
