Plasterboard Rekindles Liverpool’s Great Tradition
High performance plasterboard from Knauf
Drywall sets the tone for quality construction in a stunning new
residential development amid the classic architecture of Liverpool’s
World Heritage Site. Knauf Soundshield partitions at The Unity
provide enhanced acoustic privacy, rekindling the tradition of
excellence in the city’s great buildings.
The Unity is a 27 storey apartment building and one of two towers
in a £60 million mixed use development at Chapel Street
in central Liverpool. It is close to the Three Graces –
the trio of riverfront buildings at the focus of the city’s
architectural heritage. Topped by a futuristic penthouse pod,
The Unity has 161 luxury apartments varying from one to three
bedrooms. The adjoining second tower, the 16 storey 20 Chapel
Street, has 13,935m2 of office accommodation and 836m2 of ground
floor retail space. The project was designed by architects Allford,
Hall, Monaghan, Morris and built by Laing O’Rourke for Rumford
Investments.
Using Knauf Drywall products supplied by Encon, Manchester, Blackburn-based
sub-contractor European Commercial Interiors (ECI) was one of
two installers responsible for ceilings and partitions throughout
The Unity. With specification support from the Knauf Drywall Technical
Services Team, ECI installed 130mm separating walls consisting
of two layers of 15mm Knauf Soundshield on each side of Knauf
‘C’ studs. With a 25mm insulation quilt in the void,
this partition delivers 57dB airborne sound reduction between
apartments – providing privacy that meets the highest modern
standards. The partition also has a 90-minute fire rating.
Jeff Eastham, Managing Director of ECI, says partitions within
apartments are mostly single layers of 12.5mm Knauf Soundshield
on 70mm Knauf ‘C’ studs, which give 40dB airborne
sound reduction between rooms. Knauf Sound Moistureshield is used
for extra durability in the more humid atmosphere of bathrooms.
The Knauf MF Ceiling System, using standard 12.5mm wallboard,
is used throughout the apartments. ECI installed the Knauf Shaftwall
system, with its Coreboard and Fireshield, in service cores.
“We have a long relationship with Knauf Drywall,”
says Jeff Eastham. “Their products are very good to work
with – and they offer excellent support and technical backup.
This enabled us to exploit all the benefits of drywall construction
and meet a challenging schedule.”
