Security Features -
April 2009
Paxton
Access show their newly released access control units, Net2
plus and Net2 nano, at IFSEC 2009.
Released
to the market in April, these eagerly awaited additions
to the Net2 range provide even more flexibility when specifying
or installing an access control system.
Net plus and Net2 nano have been designed to extend the
possibilities of Net2, Paxton Access’ networked access
control system.
Net2 plus is a new control unit for the Net2 access control
system. It has an on-board RJ45 socket to connect to a TCP/IP
network in the same way as any other IP device, removing
the need for a separate piece of hardware. This diverse
control unit can also be used as a TCP/IP to RS485 converter
for when it is not possible to get a network point exactly
where you want it. While the current specification of Net2
plus is the same as the other Net2 control units, it is
likely to be increased in the future. Using Net2 plus means
your client’s investment is future proofed. As Net2
plus develops, existing sites will be able to take advantage
of its increased functionality.
Net2 nano is a wireless control unit for the Net2 access
control system. Net2 nano removes the need for hardwiring
between door controllers and a PC by replacing a wired connection
with a wireless one. Simply connect a Net2Air USB bridge
to the Net2 server PC and it will pick up and communicate
with the Net2 nano control units in range. A limit of 10
Net2 nano control units per Ethernet or USB bridge and a
maximum of 200 Net2 nano control units per site is recommended.
Paxton Access will be demonstrating both of these fantastic
new products, on their stand at IFSEC.
Visit the Paxton Access Stand E20, Hall 4, 11th to 14th
May at the NEC Birmingham to see the opportunities and benefits
that these new breakthroughs will bring to access control.

HID
on the Desktop™ adds a logical dimension to physical
access control installations
Cost-Effective
Solution Supports Risk-Appropriate Authentication for Logical
Access
HID Global recently announced the launch of HID on the Desktop™,
a powerful set of logical access control solutions that
can extend the reach of an organization’s existing
physical access infrastructure. Mirroring the secure and
convenient user experience popularized by the company’s
physical access control platforms, HID on the Desktop delivers
user-friendly convenience and improved risk management for
secure access to Windows®.
HID on the Desktop represents a bold departure from the
product positioning and value propositions offered by other
strong authentication solutions on the market. Built out
of a need to balance ease-of-use, cost and diverse security
requirements, this economical solution allows organizations
to leverage existing physical access cards, enabling physical
access control integrators to use HID technology to provide
customers with complementary logical access solutions.
HID on the Desktop solutions demystify strong (multi-factor)
authentication for both the end-user and the administrator,
enabled by the use of a single credential for both physical
and logical access. A three-component solution (HID cards,
OMNIKEY® readers and naviGO™ software), HID on
the Desktop provides corporate enterprises with the flexibility
to deploy the most “risk-appropriate” authentication
method. Depending on the employee role or job function,
a single system can be used to manage different methods
of log-on security supporting two-factor authentication
(using PIN and card).
A key innovative component of the HID on the Desktop solution
is naviGO software, which extends the Windows authentication
model to include HID PROX and iCLASS® contactless cards,
allowing users the ability to use their existing HID access
control badge to log on to Windows. In addition, naviGO
allows card holders to manage their own enrollment, establish
and manage their PIN and provides Emergency.
Access via Knowledge Based Authentication - all through
a self-service application. naviGO also supports PKI based
credentials including digital certificates on HID’s
Crescendo™ smart cards.
“Organizations implementing the HID on the Desktop
solution will see significant improvements in terms of cost
of ownership, ease of use and speed of deployment against
other complex authentication methods on the market,”
said Anthony Ball, senior vice president, Identity and Access
Management (IAM), HID Global. “Never before has it
been so easy to have convenience meet security on the desktop.”
HID Global is hosting worldwide HID on the Desktop launch
events.
New
Padlock has surprise for theives
The
new alarm padlock from Securesight has a built-in siren
that goes off if it is knocked or moved, sending surprised
opportunist thieves and vandals running.
The 110dB siren is as loud as a car alarm and cannot be
muffled, sounding for ten seconds before automatically re-arming
itself ready to deter again.
The Alarm Padlock is perfect for wherever conventional padlocks
would be used, offering double the protection for just £19.99.
Not only is it ideal for gates, garages, storage facilities
and lock-ups, but it can also be used to protect particular
favourites of the opportunist thief which until now have
been difficult to alarm, such as bicycles, tool boxes, on-site
kit and machinery.
The Alarm Padlock can work over 2000 times before batteries
need replacing and can be used armed or unarmed thanks to
a clever shackle system. It is extremely robust and weather
resistant with a hardened steel shackle and zinc alloy body.
The product is the latest in a family of innovative theft
deterrent solutions from Securesight which also includes
award-winning digital security camera floodlights, announcers,
lanterns and door viewers.
Largest
operation ever mounted in Scotland to tackle rogue security
companies
Investigators from the SIA supported officers from Strathclyde
Police, Lothian & Borders Police, UK Border Agency and
the Department of Work and Pensions, to target rogue security
firms working at construction sites across the Strathclyde
and Lothian & Borders areas.
For the operation, the partners pooled intelligence to tackle
companies believed to have links to serious and organised
crime. Investigators targeted security operatives at 202
construction sites which were secured by 37 different security
companies.
- 120 licensable security operatives were checked
- 56 Reported offences
Investigations are continuing.
Christy Hopkins, SIA Head of Investigation, said:
“This huge operation shows the commitment of the SIA
and our partners to target rogue security companies that
seek to profit by disregarding the law. The SIA regulates
the private security industry to ensure that only fit and
proper people are employed in these positions of trust within
our communities. We will continue to work closely with our
partners to cause maximum disruption to rogue security firms,”
Detective Inspector Calum Young, Maryhill CID, said:
“I am pleased with the results of Wednesday’s
operation. The sole purpose of this and the operations that
will follow, is to target those individuals and companies
that continue to act outside the law.
“Our message to those who are active in the Private
Security Industry is a simple one; you are governed by the
Private Security Industry Act 2001, act and work in accordance
with the law.”
Phil Taylor, Regional Director of the UK Border Agency in
Scotland and Northern Ireland said:
“Our message is clear - we will not tolerate immigration
related crime, which threatens to damage our communities.
This successful operation shows our commitment to work closely
with our colleagues in police forces throughout Scotland
to help uncover this activity.
“We are determined to deal with this threat, and we
will step in and identify those who are breaking our immigration
laws and remove those people who are in the UK illegally.”
New
doors for new station
London's
new St Pancras International station – home of the
Eurostar - has been fitted with Martin Roberts steel doorsets
from Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies.
Over 400 fire and acoustic doorsets with bespoke vision
panels, integrated access control and clean-lined hardware
have been installed as part of the refurbishment at both
passenger level and throughout back of house areas. Martin
Roberts performance doorsets were chosen for their ability
to meet the demanding criteria of the transportation sector
set by high volumes of traffic and likely abuse.
Function often takes precedence over form when it comes
to doorsets destined for a rail network, which demands robust,
long life-cycle solutions. However Martin Roberts steel
doorsets provide the perfect blend of durability and high
performance coupled with value for money and visual appeal.
Successfully tested to one million cycles in accordance
with European Standard BS EN 1191, their benefits and superiority
over timber include increased durability and reduced maintenance,
coupled with better fire, acoustic and security performance
and enhanced life-cycle.
The installation was overseen by Ingersoll Rand to ensure
accuracy and continuity of installation throughout the process.
This dedicated service meant that they were on hand to provide
on going guidance and help in ensuring design approval from
the consortium of different parties involved in the scheme.
These included everyone from the individual rail companies
to English Heritage who helped oversee the development of
the Grade I listed building.
Thieves
tracked with Navman wireless technology
Landscaping, horticultural and grounds care specialists
Bourne Amenity is celebrating the recovery of one of its
vehicles – stolen but swiftly located by Navman Wireless
real time vehicle tracking technology.
The route taken by hapless thieves from the company’s
Tenterden depot was observed by Transport Manager Graham
Grieves, via the tracking systems’ advanced software
system, and he immediately notified the police of its whereabouts.
“We use the Navman Wireless system, principally, to
cut costs and boost our business efficiency, but it also
sends an alert to my mobile if one of our vehicles moves
outside of normal working hours,” explained Graham.
When he received such an alert on the evening of February
10, he knew something was amiss and that he had to act quickly.
Graham contacted the police and logged onto the system’s
tracking software from his home PC.
“Being able to accurately track the stolen vehicle’s
movement in real time meant that there was no escape and
police soon homed in on it,” he said.
“Although the thieves made a hasty get away, the vehicle
– a beaver tail flat bed truck worth more than £20,000
– was recovered and this was invaluable to the ongoing
operation of our business.”
An additional security tracking device had also been fitted
in the truck but this was discovered and removed by the
thieves before they stole the vehicle. The Navman Wireless
tracking unit however was never uncovered, having been too
well concealed.
Although no arrests have yet been made, Kent Police are
still investigating the case.
Tony Neill, Executive Vice President, Navman Wireless, added:
“The tangible benefits to vehicle operators of investing
in telematics are considerable and we are delighted it is
demonstrating its value to John Bourne & Co. Further
significant returns on investment should continue to be
realised by the company in the months ahead.”
Navman Wireless vehicle tracking enables users to track,
message and monitor their fleet from almost any PC at any
location, providing vital information about companies’
workforces and mobile assets.
