12th Jun 07 - New Ascom A71 Loneworker Handset
11th Jun 07 - Ladderstore.com lends support to HSE Ladder Exchange

New Ascom A71 Loneworker Handset
New Ascom A71 Loneworker HandsetImproving safety and security for loneworkers is an all important part of risk management. Ascom has a long history of providing integrated alarm and incident location systems, and the launch of our new a71 handset marks the latest development in that expertise.

The new a71 is a full spec alarm unit with the added functionality of two way text messaging and location. It replaces the U970 and U922 handsets in a significantly more compact and feature laden design. It is ideal for use in specific loneworker situations or hazardous environments.

The system is capable of generating four types of alarm call; press button; snatch cord; man-down and no-movement. Alarm calls can be sent to a central control and/or a predetermined group of other handset carriers and off-site via an autodialler. The handset incorporates two types of incident location devices using infra-red of RF frequencies. This enables the alarm message to include accurate location information ensuring response is rapid and focussed. As an additional aid, the unit emits a two-tone acoustic signal to help guide ‘rescuers’ to the ‘victim’. The a71 also interfaces with existing third party devices to receive information or control equipment such as doors, fire panels etc.

Two way alphanumeric text messaging is displayed on a large backlit LCD with adjustable text size. The a71 can store up to 20 x 128 character messages. Priority calls will queue jump other traffic if flagged urgent and there is also a vibrating alert function.

All this functionality is packed within a very compact and robust handset measuring only 104 x 62 x 36 mm including clip, weighing 120gr including battery. The a71 is also available in an ATEX version.

Ladderstore.com lends support to HSE Ladder Exchange
Ladderstore.com lends support to HSE Ladder ExchangeBusinesses using ladders will be in the spotlight this June and July as the Health & Safety Executive focuses its attention on ladder safety. The Ladder Exchange 2007 initiative will carry the key message: “It if is right to use a ladder, use the right ladder and use it safely.”

Many retailers have pledged their support including Ladderstore.com, an internet company selling ladders and ladder safety tagging systems. Ideal for those businesses who cannot always find the time to get to a local builders merchant or retailer, Ladderstore.com is offering special incentives to check, replace and maintain ladders as part of the HSE ladder exchange activity.

A free ladder safety checklist can be downloaded from the ladderstore link; a free sample - worth £4.41 - of its Ladderlog safety tag and holder is available on request - plus there is a 10% discount on all new ladders purchased. Visitors to the HSE website at www.hse.gov.uk can select the link www.ladderstore.com/HSE to access these offers or else call Ladderstore on 0870 153 9159.

Ian Greenwood, HSE Head of Falls from Height said “In 2005/06 a total of 46 people died and a further 3351 employees suffered major injury as a result of a fall from height in the workplace. We urge industry to get involved in ladder exchange and help prevent many of these injuries which can be avoided by using the right equipment and taking simple precautions”.

Gail Hounslea, Ladderstore.com, commenting on the HSE initiative, said: “We are very pleased to support any move that highlights the potential dangers of working at height. The HSE initiative promotes the importance of worker safety by offering practical assistance alongside sensible solutions.”
