FIRA launches new online Specifiers’ Guide - designed to make life easy
Click to go to FIRA WebsiteFIRA (Furniture Industry Research Association) has launched a new online specifiers’ guide, which is designed to help specifiers determine what standards apply to specific office and contract furniture applications. Furniture specification for the UK market can be more complex than at first sight. It requires an in depth knowledge of British, European and International Standards, and, where some factors are not adequately covered by existing standards, further knowledge is necessary to ensure that product liability and general safety requirements are addressed.
Some specifications will not always be definitive. In many cases (for example finishes) it will be necessary to select a performance level applicable to the severity of a product’s end use.
The new online specifiers’ guide is regularly updated, accessible 24 hours a day and covers all contract and office furniture at a cost of only £95 per annum. Segmented by product type, the guide comprises 12 easy to understand documents covering general requirements, lists of standards and specific sections relating to workstations, lighting, seating, screening, monitor arms and so on.
FIRA Testing Manager Phil Reynolds comments: “Employers have an obligation to provide a safe working environment for their staff. Purchasing equipment that meets the requirements of current British, European or International standards goes a long way towards doing this and also mitigates any claims should there be an incident in the workplace.”
This guide is the latest development of the FIRA “all you need to know about furniture” website www.askFIRA.co.uk. By signing up for the guide users will also be allocated a unique username and password enabling access to technical information, a suppliers directory, business information sheets and publications.

Consultancy and support teams further expand at emsConsultancy and support teams further expand at ems
Five further appointments have strengthened the team at ems, the environmental workplace management consultancy based in Horsham, West Sussex. Four individuals join the consultancy team and one joins the admin support team.
The continuing expansion of ems’ services and high level of customer service has led to the four new appointments in the consultancy team. Stuart Denton-Brown (far right of photo) joined the team in November, “I was looking for a new challenge and joining ems has enabled me to use my existing experience and gain further knowledge and skills”.
Also in November Sophia El-Kader (second from left of photo) moved over from the ems on-site laboratory to join the expanding consultancy team. “This is a really exciting time for me to move from the laboratory over to the consultancy side of this professional company. I am looking forward to not only helping the impressive range of ems clients but also looking after the vast array of technical equipment the ems team utilise.”
In January Tat-On Man (middle of photo) and Steve Mills (pictured far left) both joined the team and look forward to developing their customer skills. “After working for 5 years in engineering design I am keen to use my knowledge in developing relationships with ems clients and understanding their environmental and workplace needs”, Tat-On commented.
“ems is providing me with an opportunity to enhance my career in health and safety after many years in the RAF. The consultant role will allow me to use my interpersonal skills in developing a rapport with my portfolio of blue chip clients“, said Steve.
To support the increasing consultancy team Lindsey Ray (second from right of picture) has joined the admin support team. Lindsey said, “I am looking forward to working with the admin team supporting and assisting the ems consultants to maintain the high level of service”.
ems is continuing the expansion of their consultancy team as their broad range of services and clients develop.
